Heater week; 3/8/2024-3/17/2024 (Chicago, IL): In contrast to the Chênes, which was more red-fruited and perfumed (at least for the time it wasn't corked), this felt a little darker and more brooding in its fruit profile. The tannins are very similar though, in that they will need a very long time to come around, and the question again is whether the fruit will be there when that happens. Despite its 25+ years, this is still a wine more of potential.

{Purchased ~ 2005, 1st of 2 bottles; PopNPour over 4 hours} Initially a dirty, feral, barnyard nose that mostly cleaned up; developed into complex black cherry and walnut flavors; minerals and savoury notes with long length. Not what I was expecting but pretty interesting to drink.

Dinner at Nico Osteria: Lots of pretty red fruit with light spice and florality on the nose here, but I find the palate a bit lean and slightly austere, with a surprising amount of tannin on the finish.

La Paulée de New York Gala Dinner (Pier Sixty, Chelsea Piers - New York NY): Small glass, brief note. From 3L from the domaine. Combination of red and black cherry with very good power. More meaty than I typically expect from Volnay. Good now, definitely upside, t least in this jero format.
