Beautiful nose of ripe black cherries roasted with rosemary and thyme, spice box, stewed black plums and leather. Full-bodied, this is rich and round and delicious! Went fabulously well with red wine braised lamb shoulder. Fully mature, this is certainly past it's peak, but oh so delicious right now! Drink up! 93
Note: Faded relatively quickly, so decant and drink within the hour.

Smells of stewed fruits, baking spice and leather. Full-bodied and with plenty of structure left. Palate echoes the nose with a hint of mint thrown in. This was fine with beef ribs and would have been equally at home with a rich ragu. Drink soon. 89

2001 Restrospective (Gray Newman's): Fresh, intense sour black cherry and mushroom on the nose. The black fruit is concentrated and juicy, but there's a touch of alcoholic heat here, and the tannins are on the grainy/chunky side; this lacks elegance. Would have been better with food, maybe. Not bad, but this is not in a style that appeals to me.

First bottle opened of 6 in the cellar, purchased at release. Still a bit firm; fine tannins quite noticeable at the finish. Opened up magnificently over the course of dinner. Round and rich, lovely weight and texture. Savored every moment on the palate. This is Brunello at its finest. Classic Sangiovese notes of morello cherry and leather. Complex, ethereal. Almost Burgundian. From a top producer in an outstanding vintage. I will wait a couple more years before opening another bottle.

Easy to drink with food- not too intense but the prototypical Brunello, wouldn't wait to drink it any longer.
Improved a lot after being open a couple hours -
