Never been to Australia, know little about its wines. Bought this at Heathrow some years back for no particular reason. This one retails for like USD 100. With a metal cap, go figure. Certainly an Aussie "Shiraz" rather than a proper French or even Washington State Syrah. There is a tartness foreign to French and Washington syrah, which while kind of zippy and intriguing, better belongs to some Southern Italian wine or some low end syrah from like Lidl. The fruit is there as is the acidicity. Tannins are absent until hours of decanting and even decanting does not reveal any bouquet or sophistication. They say this is about the best Aussie "Shiraz" wine there is ... which is a fairly low bar. No reason for anyone to buy this for its price.

Wolf Blass are more than just a quality export quaffer for the UK. At the upper end they have the Estates Series that exemplify a Barossa district. Here, the low lying ancient sedimentary soils and cool breezes of the Dorrien district showcases a really classy, finely balanced, elegant wine, with silky long rounded tannins; and an intense flavour profile of blackberry, blueberry, dark chocolate, expresso, black olives and oaked spices. Just hitting its straps, but with years ahead of it. A Wozza 95/100 (4.2/5.0) from me.

A well made wine with quality fruit, just bigger than us my preference even for this more “restrained” version of the style.
