  • Served blind to Doug and David during our tasting/wine trading on 7/21/04. This was a very unusual bottle that I recently purchased at the Bremer Ratskeller in Germany. I figured David would enjoy it, and I think he did since he asked to take home the remainder. He guessed Alsatian riesling, which goes to show how unique this wine is. Pale white color, with absolutely no indication that this was made from a red grape. Fascinating nose that seemed very Germanic to me, but like no variety that I had ever tried. Some mineral/slatey flavors like a riesling, but mixed with some fascinating ripe red berry and licorice notes. David and Doug found it a bit hot on the finish, but I thought it was very well balanced. Probably not something you would want to age, but delightful now. A wonderful wine made even more so by it's uniqueness. I wish I had brought more home with me, but I guess part of what made this special is that I may never have another wine quite like it.
