Durian and Wine at Alex's (Alex and Fiona's in AMK): Quite delicious. Neither the nose complex nor the most compelling and, if I am to be honest, a rather advanced, but yummy nonetheless. The nose had a whiff of ripe blueberries and blackberries streaked with a bit of stalky herb, funky earth and drifts of smoky, spicy cigarette notes. The palate still showed a chew of fine, mouth coating tannins and bright, orange citrus acidity, but the flavours were soft and mellow and rather advanced, with shades of preserved berries and cherries and a haw flake sweetness trailing away into a deliciously smoky, ashy finish. It was just a tad soft and lacking conviction at the finish. Otherwise, this was very enjoyable.
Quite light coloured and weedy on first opening. But quickly colour and body evolved. Lovely mid garnet with old mahogany tones. Plenty of sharp red fruits, currants and cherries. Some warm spices, cinnamon and nutmeg. Definitely that salty minerality. Great length but without having big extract or coarse body. Finesse, elegance, complexity. Really, some great virtues. And more to come I suspect.
Needed decanting through muslin as the cork broke up. Immediate expression of spicy fruit closed down to saline minerality for an hour or so, gradually to re-emerge over the next two hours. Very classic; firm spine of acid, with sweet spice and toasted red floral element emerging on the mid-palate and finish. Impressive with more pleasure to come.
