Bill's Monthly Lunch - October 2012 (Vancouver, BC): Tasted blind – medium red with some bricking at the rim. Mature nose of dried and ripe red fruits with notes of tomatoes and well integrated oak. Soft in the mouth with mainly resolved tannins and excellent acidity. Drinking well now. Very good.
Medium red with brown edges. Opens with a bit of funk then some coffee and dark fruit, a hint of herbs as well. The nose evolves for a good hour in the glass. Not at all austere like a previous bottle. a perfect soft finish with some nice acid to finish off.
This was weird. I love old Riojas but this just didn't fit in anywhere and it seemed to oxidize in the glass. There is a cheap strawberry balsamic thing, like salad dressing from Denny's, watermelon Jolly Rancher, sickly sweet smoke, rose, cranberry, soil, gamey, leaves. The high acidity, instead of being pleasurable with lamb, just felt vinegary. Not enjoyable.
Medium red with tawny/orange at the rim. Gorgeous aromatics! Very complex set of aromas; strawberry, earth, forest, and a hint of pine resin. Medium/delicate body. Plenty of acidity, and a suave, elegant mouth feel. Finishes just a little tart. Excellent wine; very high class.
