Lo and behold - this has finally woken up and it's really quite good. Quite a rich and dark nose, with forest fruits and leather, then a rich, deep mouthful of cranberry, cherry, plus the requisite blackberry at the end. The balance is good and there is a hint of chalk on the finish. Not at all OTT, but rather like a civilized Madiran, oddly enough. This will keep for yonks.

From a half. Much better than last year and already better than the 98, the tannins are beginning to fade and the fruit is starting to emerge. Still quite burly and thick, but I think it always will be. Good notes of blackcurrant and black cherry with a lot of leather and a decent finish. Needs another two years and probably won't really hit its peak for another five, in a normal bottle size. I still think the Crescendo will always be better from 04.

Hopefully this will improve, because Coulys often go through this sort of patch. A little green at first, thick, heavy and still a little tannic, not much fruit and not tasting very ripe. Not a patch on the Crescendo.

Green bell peppers and herbs. Tannins a bit rough around the edges. Good wine and well received and went with pork served.
