Pure and mature old school bdx. Crimson color, nose of perfumed spice box, green peppers, dusty cherry fruit. Plate is smooth and toothsome, steer fruit, cedar, green forest and macerated fruit. Smooth and easy drinking.
Château Gruaud-Larose Vertical (Knightsbridge and Abigail's): This is a true 'wow' wine with profound complexity, character and intensity. Outperformed more heralded vintages in the vertical, including 1982. Stunning, full nose has intoxicating depth and layers -- dried plum, cigar, tar, earth, green herb and bell pepper. The palate is similarly impressive with medium body, lively fruit and stunning depth. Ashy plum fruit and complex flavors that echo the nose. Tannins are fine and smooth. Long, lingering finish. A wine to snatch up if you can.
Charity Auction Tasting for Brigid Collins Family Support Center: I've liked the '83, and the fact that it can be found for reasonable prices in the shadow of the '82. This was no exception. Decanted for about four hours. Nice truffle, cedar and cherry. I could use a little bump in density to reach exceptional, but still a great wine with a few year left. This won't get any better, and is probably on the tail end of it's drinking window.
clearly on it's decline, but gracefully so. wise and mellow. light- the acid and tannin are long since past, but the earth is ever present and it has a length unsurpassed. a nice braised carrot thing going on along with the expected strength of leather and pepper. incredible this held up as well in spite of spending it's last ten years upright in a cupboard!
