  • This was cool. Needed decanting and a little sharp but fun.

  • Less lively than the 1970, a bit dry, less aromatic, tart finish, a bit thin and fading.

  • Part of a batch of older Bordeaux of unknown provenance. This one was particularly bad with substantial seepage from the cork. Still, nothing ventured, nothing gained. On decanting it didn't display much of anything but after 90 minutes there was a little fruit still left. Overall - its a shame what people do to their older wines!

  • A friend opened this bottle at his Summer house in Michigan a couple weeks ago. He obtained this bottle as a gift from an acquaintance in France. it had been stored in the cellar of a French wine merchant since release supposedly. This was paired with dinner of grilled lamb chops which had been marinated in lemon, garlic and mustard using a recipe that my wife got out of the most recent Lewelling newsletter. My wife also made a red wine/beef stock and leftover marinade reduction au jus with the lamb. Some of the best lamb I have ever had. About 15-20 years ago this estate was renamed d'Armailhac. We opened this along side a 2000 d'Armhailhac which I liked better. 1971 was an average to below average year on the left bank. Low neck fill. Saturated cork that came out in 2 pieces. Good color for its age. Red with a brownish rim. Musty basement nose. This wine was light on the fruit but considering the vintage and age it had more than expected. On the palate the wine was leafy with cedar notes. The finish turned slightly acidic. Wonderful experience even if the wine was not outstanding. 86 points.
