  • Definitely interesting. Full bodied & for 14.5% abv, there wasn't any hint of it.
Super complex on the nose & palate. Almond, pepper(corns) & maybe quince.
This does seem to cry out for food since it is so distinctive. It would be a great counterweight to a lot of bold dishes.

  • This is a slightly odd, one-off from Knoll. It had an unusually high must weight in 2012 and didn’t ferment to complete dryness – hence why it is not labeled as Smaragd - and was actually bottled alongside the 2013 Smaragds.

I brought it to a friend’s 40th birthday dinner, where it paired with the main course of @ottolenghi's 18-hour slow-cooked, sweet-and-sour pork. And, oh man, did it go together perfectly.

The wine was notably viscous (it clocks in at 14.5% abv), with a cornucopia of aromas (citrus, almond, oolong are a few that I remember) and was noticeably off-dry on the palate, but with a line of acidity that kept things coming. White pepper notes punctuated the luscious (kind of candied) tropical fruit, honey and caramel notes. I think this will age quite well, but it was certainly drinking nicely already
A great deal on a closeout sale from @zachys meant I picked this up for under $40.

Fun bit of trivia, for those not in the Knoll: the beautiful, distinctive label features St. Urban, patron saint of vineyards and winemakers .

  • Dark golden color for its age. Even spicier aromatic start than the '13 Vinothekfullung with more fruit as well. Rich apple and lemon custard aromas. Flavors of apple and ginger with good weight, but slightly simple and less elegant textures.
