I like Jancis Robinson's comments on 2004 Wittmann Silvaner "You may well think I have gone barking mad with this week's choice. Rheinhessen Silvaner? Has she finally lost it? It's true that I am well aware that the great wide world is not exactly agog for this sort of wine, but I think they should be. It has such integrity, it is so obviously the right grape in the right place, and in this case is clearly vinified in extremely capable hands." I think 2005 Wittmann Silvaner we had reensured her thoughts on this wine - it was incredible for this grape. We blind tasted it at first, the bottle shape looked like a Riesling but the nose and palate were different, grassy and mineral with finish of modest bitterness (vs apple nose and modest sweetness for typical dry reisling) but nice touch of white flower and yellow fruits. The wine got more structure over next 4 hours, and the palate improved with deeper minerality. A good and fun summer wine to try.
