  • Good wine but toward the end of its drinking window. Still evolving in the glass.

Cherry and plum compote, raisin, olive, tobacco, smoke, herb, black pepper, pink flowers, mocha, and baking spice. Med tannin, med+ acidity, high alcohol. Complex but drops off mid palate to return with a longish finish. Big wine despite its age.

  • Bold and dense. Certainly not the new lighter style of Aussie Shiraz but incredibly complex with layers of fruit (sour cherries, ripe damsons), sweet spicy, black pepper, graphite, smoke, vanilla, even something ethereal and a touch of coconut underneath. With every moment new layers of flavors appear. Mouth-filling and really long, the fruit seemingly lingering forever on the tongue. The mid-palate is a bit heaty, it cannot quite conceal its 15.5%. But nonetheless and without a doubt a great wine, now probably at its peak.

  • This wine is just starting to peak, it is a wonderful experience of balance, subtle fruit and a full mouth feel. Absolutely wonderful and well worth the wait from when I cellared it in 2006.

Johann Georg Shiraz is dense red black in colour. On the nose there are intense rich dark berry fruits, floral perfume, blueberry, nutmeg spice, cedar, roast meats, coffee and herbs. Powerful and elegant at the same time, the rich palate is full-bodied and superbly balanced. Pristine dark fruit is complimented with subtle barrel ferment characters adding complexity. Fine natural tannins add structure and definition to this multi-layered Shiraz. A long lasting finish completes this distinguished and stylish wine. Johann is a superb old vine Barossa Shiraz that whilst drinks well upon release will ultimately benefit from a decade or more in the cellar.

  • Australian Cult Wines (Sydney, Australia): A youthful nose of lovely floral notes, black pepper and vibrant red fruits. The standout elements of the palate were the great texture and stylish mouth-feel although the generous flavour and very good length were also positive attributes. One of the wines on the night to show the critical balance between generosity of flavour and structure that turns a very good wine into an excellent wine.
