  • Bottled in a 0,72-liter bottle.

luminous, translucent reddish brick-orange color. Very aged nose with tertiary, earthy notes of sous-bois, some meat consommé, a little bit of smoke, light beef jerky tones and a hint of soy sauce. Very little fruit left here. The wine is somewhat full-bodied, smooth and gentle on the palate with flavors of sweet liqueur-ish red fruits, some sun-baked earth, a little bit of cherry marmalade, light leathery tones and a vinegary hint of VA. The wine is moderately high in acidity with quite gently grippy tannins. The finish is long, somewhat sweet-toned and very tertiary with mellow tannic grip and developed flavors of cherry marmalade, some leathery tones, a little bit of acetic VA, light meaty notes of beef jerky and a sweet hint of raspberry liqueur.

A rather old and tertiary Boca that feels like it has seen some better days, but still retains enough fruit and complexity to be of some pleasure. The overall feel is a bit tired and the volatile acetic notes are starting to push a bit too much to the fore, but the wine is still surprisingly enjoyable for an Alto Piemonte red at 47 years of age. Not the greatest Vallana Boca out there, but a somewhat enjoyable old Piedmontese red all the same.

  • A bit lactic nose, considering the age strong chocolate and coffee flavours on the palate. The latter is in my mind typical for good -71 Barolos. Not as much dept in this as in the good Barolos from the same vintage, very nice quality anyway.

  • Alto Piemonte (The Gander, NYC): Rich, complex, chocolate. Rich and intense. Again, shockingly so for 46 year old "nebbiolo".
