Has a smooth texture and good flavor but the flavor intensity is flat. A bit on the acidic side. Nice finish. I don't see any reason to hold these any longer. May even be slightly past peak. Clean nose, with quite intense aromas of smokey bacon, roasted meats, black fruit and herbs. Full-bodied on the palate, with medium acidity, ample dry tannins and similar flavors as for the nose. The middle has filled in substantially since my last tasting (3/27/03). Medium, dry finish. This wine has more structure than I originally estimated. It will probably remain a pleasant drink but the tannins are tough and I doubt that the fruit/tannin balance will allow them to ever fully settle down. (855 views) | |

Opened and served immediately in a Riedel restaurant series Bordeaux wine glass. Somewhere between dusty rose and garnet color in the glass, slightly dusty looking. Huge bacon fat nose that pegs it as Northern Rhone with some roasted meat. Yum. Not quite as pleasing on the palate, mainly raspberries and maybe red berries. The establishment of the Avignonese Papacy (1305-1377) brought fame to the region's wine-so much so that their Burgundian neighbors to the north banned wines from the Rhone in 1446, a measure that effectively cut off trade with England and other Northern European markets for over 200 years. Stretching southward from Lyon to Avignon, the Rhone produces a wide variety of wines, with the appellations north of Valence producing the least (in volume), and the towns south of Montelimar producing prodigious amounts. As in other regions, the most interesting wines come from small farms. Saint-Joseph, in the northern Rhone, extends for some distance between Condrieu in the north to Saint-Peray in the south. The reds are made from Syrah and the rare whites from Marsanne and Rousanne, and Viognier. |
