  • Very bold, with noticeable tannins even with a double decant. Mellowed out fairly quickly in the glass with nice fruit. Some sediment.

  • Popped and poured, this is incredible stuff. The enrapturing nose wafts huge doses of cedar, chocolate and dulce de leche with secondary aromas of graphite, espresso and black cherry. The body is medium in stature but packed with texture and depth of flavor. Acid is bright but balanced, and fully integrated. The tannins are dense, immensely chocolatey and undyingly pleasurable. As they release, spearmint, saline, dark cherry and cedar come spilling out. This unique profile is incredibly engaging and inspiring, I can't stop sipping it. Bravo.

  • Poured through Venturi into decanter and than consumed over following 3 hours. Moderately aromatic, with a beautiful combination of blackberries, black plum, tar, iodine, licorice and a lot of black pepper. Palate: dense mouthfeel with chewy fine grain tannins, this beautifully integrates its lively acidity. Initially very sweet blackberries, blueberries and raspberries which eventually calm a bit and expose blackcurrant, tar, and smoke. There is also subtle but discernible saline, cinnamon and mocha. As it oxygenates, the fruit becomes less sweet and the dirty side of the wine strengthens as orange citrus emerges. The finish holds all these flavors together. Overall this is a fantastic wine, especially for the 2011 vintage. While not as good as the remarkable 2010, it may actually be a more impressive effort given the challenging growing season and harvest. Scott Southard, already formidable, continues to improve as a winemaker. This wine has another 3 years, easy, of topflight drinking.
