impressive aged Brunello ... still dark fruit along with earthy, light oak, mineral, tar notes and balanced acids and tannins - no brown edges at all on a deep dark wine ... nuances changing over several hours, but no fade to the intensity ... this wine has been cellared since purchase ... enjoyed in Italy (Sud Tyrol) and no one accused the wine of being too "American" or over extracted ...

Past peak. Acidity and tannins stills present and the bottle was not flawed or defective - but all fruit gone. Very disappointed based on the other recent reviews here, but this bottle was a perfect example of past peak.

This drank extremely well. Opened up and put in the decanter for 2 hours before drinking. It really came alive after about 4 hours. Was perfect with a short rib ragu.
Mushroom upfront, some tomato leaf, red and black fruits.
On the palate, super well integrated, fine grained medium tannin, still good acidity. Sour cherry, more mushroom/sous bois and notes of dark chocolate.
I think this will stay in this place for some years, but not really a sense in holding if you have any.

Hmm, this was great. Someone else in here said they could just repeat old TN; I agree, in my case from january 2006. It was "extremely smooth" back then, now it's extremely-er smooth-er! Licorice, black cherry and mouthfeel of dark chocolate. This may have been early in the modern single vineyard brunello evolution and got some takes (pans) that it was made for young drinking; well, maybe so, but 26 years ain't chump change and this has aged very well. Wish I had more, CT says a bottle left, but seems to have disappeared sometime in the last 17 years.

(Castello Banfi Brunello di Montalcino Poggio alle Mura) Dark red violet color; spicy, incense nose; very tasty, rich, big, tart cherry, chocolate and vanilla palate; long finish

Had this alongside several other Banfi wines. Not a great line up. This one was definitely past its peak.
