What a treat it was to open this 9+ year old petite on a snowy night. We decanted this off some substantial sediment and gave it an hour in the decanter. Great nose and a rich, lively palate of dark cherries, orange peel and baking spices. This is in a great place now, but I get the sense it will cruise for another 5-8 years. Stellar vintage, probably the best I have tasted.

Not quite as good as the outstanding 2015. This one is leaner and less ripe, cranberry and prune on the palate, bitter cocoa finish with astringent tannins.

Jaffurs demonstrates the mastery of its art with this Petite, which displays at age 8 a purity of fruit, balance and elegance, and full integration of acid, tannin and flavor, all leading to a seamless and tasty medium finish. Not a sharp edge to be found, and drinking superbly now.
My final bottle of a half case. I think this is a distinctively great wine for the price from CA. For me, most CA Syrah is too sweet, jammy, cloying, and simple. I want complexity, depth, less sweet, like blackberries with the seeds and fiber mixed in. This Petite Sirah is nothing like jammed up Syrah. It adds bramble, fresh ground pepper (white and black), and flowering plant aromas (lavender? rosemary?). It's rich, provocative, wonderful. Super on its own or as a food accompaniment to smoked brisket, braised short ribs, charred filet mignon. Not many CA producers float my boat; I buy mostly from Europe. But I keep buying from Jaffurs because whoever makes the wine rewards my preferences. At this price point, they stand out for me among American producers. Highly recommended.

4th Saturday Group (M&R's): Double blind. Aromas of black fruit, herbs and blue fruit. Much of the same on the palate. Firm, with fine-grained tannins supporting the fruit. Excellent. (M&R)
