Found a bottle in a PA state store for $30 recently and couldn’t say no. Where else do you find a 16 year old wine laying around like that? My guess is they were cleaning out the stock room and found it. Anyway, was curious about the provenance, but laid it down for a few weeks in my wine fridge.
With Easter dinner and spaghetti and meatballs planned, I decided to test this bottle out- stood it up for a few hours before opening in case of sediment. Cork split in two, but was able to still get it out. This was dark purple and had a bit of funk off the first glass but came together nicely over a few hours and paired well with dinner. For anyone who still has this bottle, I don’t think there’s any reason to wait on this, as I don’t think it will improve anymore, but it’s definitely in a nice window. Definitely a treat to have and a true testament to the aging of aglianico.

The Wines of Feudi di San Gregorio (Spacca Napoli Pizzeria - Chicago, IL): Despite the poor growing conditions in Campania in 2002, this vineyard site did quite well. Lots of drainage led to a nicely balanced wine. Nose had a good deal of mocha, coffee and oak notes. Its palate had a bit of mint with some coffee and marshmellow tones. Definitely dark fruited, there was a lot of oak going on here. Probably needs some more time to soften up some of the oak influences.
