Wonderful aromas of baked bread, citrus oil, and wet stones. Amazing depth and well integrated, yet great ying of rich fruit lifted high by the yang of the pretty bristly tension. This has really gained weight from the firm acidic driven wine I recall when first released years ago. Still long way to go and maybe even some upside with even more time. A classic Salon for the ages. Only the 1982 Salon was giving me more pleasure as we drank through 1982, 1985, 1988, 1990, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1999, and 2002.
Tight. Comes across as young. Citrus and mineral driven. Some hints of development as the palate opens. Elegant. Strong backbone but will the fruit keep up? Understated elegance is perhaps what this is, but none the less I had been hoping for so much more. 91-93p.
1996 Champagne: Citrus soda, lime, almost some petrol and rubber, very closed; intense, acid driven wine. Difficult to know where this is heading. Will the fruit open up and overpower the gigantic acidity in this one, or will it slowly faint and become even more astringent?

(Salon) Had two spectacular wines at my birthday party that were brought kindly and unexpectedly. The first was the finest bottle of 1996 Salon I have had up to this point. So clean and so perfect. Delicate as a feather. Truly Chevalier-like. Wistful wine with amazing delicacy, detail and finesse. Has years to go but is a linear, perfect beauty now.
(Salon) This wine was truly breathtaking as it had everything I look for in a profound wine. It was made from Chardonnay, it was Grand Cru and it was 1996. Nose of yeast, toast, some green apple and spice. But the story here was the palate. This was dense, ripe, yeasty, toasty and so full of flavor intensity it morphed with your mouth and all of a sudden your mouth turned in to 1996 Salon and there was no going back. Piercingly mineral with ripe, crunchy acids, some nice green fruit (by green I mean young) and an amazing finish that has multiple layers and when you think its done it is not. Keeps on giving. Obviously this wine is young and will knock you on your ass in twenty years but it is awfully tasty today. What a wine. I need to taste the 1996 Krug though as I hear it's the other contender for best of vintage.
