  • A wine of a lot of variability but definitely going the right path. We wonder if at the time they use a lot more oak.
Tasted blind and thought it was a 15 year pauillac , herby earthy rich with good oak but also austere . Interestingly very different from 3 months ago when we thought of it Burgundian. Nothing like a bit of blind tasting to humble one’s spirit. 91

  • 2 years since we had this and definitely a much better wine pushing for a few points higher.
Quite tannic still on the palate and could use in our mind a bit more time in bottle as is a bit rustic ( lacks the elegance of the 2013 - Papies 92-93). Where this excels is on the nose very earthy, evolved, a bit Burgundian in a way. Very pretty wine and with a lot of time ahead. 92

  • Intense typical nose. Balanced body and ripe tannins . Lots of earthy aromas but almost no fruit. Consume now.

  • Well aged and approaching a change in its character moving to more earthy side. Good healthy fruit , very well made wine from one of the great master of Xinomavro. Silky now , less bright on the fruit. Very pretty and elegant wine. 91

  • A single vineyard Xinomavro from an old old plot farmed organically. Fermented spontaneously with ambient yeasts, macerated with the skins for two weeks. Aged for 12 months in French 300-liter barrels, of which 20% were new. 13,5% alcohol. Tasted blind.

Dark, almost completely opaque plummy color with the slightest touch of developed maroon hue. At first the nose feels very modern and distinctively Chilean with a pronounced cassis aroma and some sweet oak spice. However, after an hour or so, the aromas is much more nuanced and savory with notes of minty herbal character, sour cherries, gravelly earth, light sanguine notes of game, a little bit of tomato leaf and a tarry hint that really reminds me of Nebbiolo. The wine is bone-dry, medium-to-moderately full-bodied and quite robust on the palate with pronounced bitterness and sinewy flavors of sour cherries, crowberries, peppery spice, gravelly earth, some minty herbal character, a little bit of sweet oak spice and an umami hint of raw beef. The wine feels very textural, tightly-knit and quite tough - like Xinomavros very often are - with high acidity and an unyielding wall of tannins. The ample tannins feel very firm and grippy, coating and drying your mouth in an instant. The finish is very tannic with intense flavors of gravel, smoky earth, sour cherry bitterness, some smoke, a little bit of tart cranberry, an umami hint of tomato and a touch of tar.

A very impressive and ridiculously tannic Xinomavro. I first thought it was a super-extracted new world Cabernet Sauvignon because of its rather pronounced cassis aroma, but after the wine opened, it started to exhibit some more classic Xinomavro aromatics - up to the point that with enough air it reminded me quite a lot of Barolo or Barbaresco, only with a subtle cassis note in the background. Considering the wine is over 7 years old now, it is still very youthful and surprisingly primary, and the tannins show no signs of resolution whatsoever. I thought the wine was no older than 2-3 years before the label was revealed. For current enjoyment, the wine really needs something hearty to be paired with - even though the wine feels overall very enjoyable, the tannins start to get almost painfully astringent after a glass or so, making your mouth feel like sanding paper. I'd let the wine age for at least a decade more in a cellar, perhaps two. There's really no need to open these any time soon. Well worth the money at 25€.
