I always say that I love Vega Sicilia, but what I really mean is that I love 30-40 year old Vega Sicilia from a great vintage. This may get there but the tannins are still very pronounced and they almost, but not completely obscure everything that might be going on underneath. I'll hold off a score and come back in ten years or so.
Beautiful nose on this vintage but this is firmer than the '96 and in need of more time. Quite delicious with layers of spicy dark fruits and the finish, while tight, bodes well for further development. 93+
In the bouquet pleasant barnyard, red fruits and mature impressions. On the palate red fruits as well, a firm amount of acidity and chocolate. Beautiful wine, but not as impressive and complex as one would expect. An off bottle? I don't know. My score is for my own reference…

(VEGA SICILIA UNICO) #4; VaynerPAZZZ (based on QPR); COLOR-great rounded red; NOSE-very grainy (barley soup, corn stalks), Grapenuts, hint of Balsamic vinegar; TASTE-some really intriguing Sherry-type flavors, caramel-butterscotch on the finish, medium bodied, great dark flavors that mellow quickly (blueberries transforming into strawberries), really nice wine, polished and elegant, but a little light & shallow for me (like meeting the Queen, but she has no depth to her conversation); JM-97; GV-91
