Great showing. Sappy red fruit. Lots of nuance with dark and red fruits. Smoke and ash contrasted with high toned red berries. Dark and dense esp for a Volnay. Very accessible and open for business. Montille needs time (20 years min) and given time I find his wines very good. This was rocking tonight.

Second time tasted in a month. Very similar in terms of its atypical depth and density for Volnay, but this bottle was more exciting than the last aromatically, with a gamy quality on top of the tart black fruit, and on the palate, where the soil infused finish and some pencil shavings added complexity and subtlety. Amazingly vigorous, youthful and well constituted for a 1990 Burgundy. Excellent tonight. Interesting that Meadows thought that this was on the verge of drying out when he tasted it a decade ago-wrong.

Nicely balanced -- not a blockbuster but still drinking very well. Modest nose, slightly muted, but nice mouth feel and plenty of fruit left with the right layering and subtlety. A very nice wine.

Unexpectedly deep in color. Anise and black fruit aromatics. Dry, dense and still full of acid and tannic structure-the antithesis of 1990! Stern, no holds barred, old fashioned Burgundy: no sweetness, no wood, no camouflage of any sort. I'd imagine this would be a shock to many people. Admirable if not great. I don't think it will get any better.

Some Wine Tasted at the Zachys Auction; 3/13/2014-3/14/2014 (RN74 - San Francisco CA): Very ripe showing the vintage character. Then also very tannic and backward, showing the older Montill style. A combination that I didn't particularly enjoy today.
