  • The wine is clear, with pale lemon-green color, and thick legs.
    On the nose, the wine is clean, with medium plus aromas of white ripe tropical fruits, banana, pineapple, vanilla, oak spices, white sweet spices, hints of green fresh herbs.
    On the palate the wine is dry, with medium plus acidity, medium plus alcohol, medium body, medium plus flavors of ripe fruits, which are balanced with lemon and unripe orange zest, green herbs, and diligent white spices.
    The wine is of a very good quality, due to its complexity and pleasant dissonance between the nose and the palate, showing length, depth, and great balanced acidity. Enjoyable now, but can benefit from further aging.

  • Tasting Ground official tasting, 2014 Eben Sadie part 1 - The Whites (Oinoscent): Semillon Blanc, Semillon Gris, Palomino, Chenin Blanc & Muscat d’ Alexandrie
    The name means The Footpath in Dutch, and comes from the name of Dirk Brand’s wheat and rooibos tea farm, where the rustic block of old vines is tucked away.
    This is surely the most isolated old vineyard in the country, presumably originally planted to supply the farmer and his neighbours. Its 1.4 hectares host varieties established in the Cape since the early days of European settlement, with most of the planting done between 1900 – 1928, and all of the vines grow on their own roots (even the chenin - untroubled by phylloxera).
    The vineyard’s survival without irrigation is also extraordinary in this hot valley in the north of the huge Swartland region, near the village of Aurora and Elands Bay on the coast. Its precise location has allowed it to survive, with an underground river flowing
    beneath it from the mountains. No herbicides have been used, and grass and weeds between the vines help dry out the winter-wet soils, while driving the vine roots deeper.
    It is a special and unique place, producing wines of great character.
    ’T Voetpad is a field blend of all the varieties - they are picked and pressed together, and co-ferment in old wooden casks.

    The wine shows medium to high intensity, a few herbal notes, citrus notes, much broader than all of the previous wines together (Sequillo, Skerpioen, Kokerboom), quince, lemon, fresh, underripe pear. Very different in style, lemon leaves and melon
    In the palate the wine is again smoother, elegant, ripe citrus fruit, pineapple, sweet apple notes, white peach, full body, nutty, mineral, smoky, high acidity and intensity with a never ending finish
    Outstanding. Wine of the tasting for me and I think for almost everyone as well

  • Delicious for a wine at this price point. Floral, honeysuckle. Paired really well with both oysters and a Caesar salad.

  • Found in my cellar. Don’t know who recommended or how I got, but have a few. This is fabulous! Pale gold, looks like a young Chenin (although I have no clue, says “field blend.) Nose isn’t that giving but here’s waterdew melon with honeysuckle and some lime notes. Really tasty, definitely “mouthwatering”. Bracing, yet has some big fruit. Will last, might be young. Definitely chenin. Wish I know what I paid, or where I got it. (-;
