A side by side of 1990 and 1984 Chave Blanc. The 90 was very good, and favored by all four of us. The color was luminous, and not unexpectedly it was even better at hour two. Clearly a vintage that is likely to survive (and thrive) indefinitely. The 1984 was a perfectly stored bottle, from a modest vintage. Not inspirational, but a fine drink.

Wow, had some lovely crab cakes from brother in MD, and defrosting one, wife made a lovely and very rich pasta, so what the heck got the one off bottle of Chave Hermitage blanc out. On the way to Ohio, one of our stops in Springfield MO, to visit the Brown Derby wine shop. A half barrel for wine closeouts, and there was a bottle of Chave Hermitage blanc, for 11.99! Being on KL mailer, I thought that’s a good deal. How many years ago was that, 1986? So finally, the cork, after removing the capsule, tried to clean off the mold, and the cork slipped right into the bottle, so I grabbed a decanter and poured it out. Amazing, a very deep yellow color, rich butterscotch flavors. Just amazing for 37 year old wine. Wow.

Northern Rhone Dinner at Marc's (DC/Silver Spring MD): Slightly bretty stink on the nose with apricot and sherry notes. Darker color (kinda apple juice colored). Some earth tones, browned fruits, fuller body. Good acid. Almost a tannin-like grip. A bit tiring to drink after a while though. Held up pretty well over 5 hrs.

brown, cloudy, and undrinkable. given chave's ability age and the old seepage seen at the top of the cork, i'll assume this was a bad bottle.
