  • Noticeable bricking, decanted thru filter/bottle spout, moderate sediment left in bottle. Still had cedar cigar box, & leather on the nose, fruit is minimal, velvet on the palate.

  • Popped and decanted for an hour and a half. Very well kept bottle with almost no sediment! The wine is a rusty maroon with a bricking, purplish rim. Surprisingly thick legs from such a difficult vintage. On the nose is classic Graves - scorched stones, smoky tobacco, celeriac chips, leather and some cassis. Very silky tannins despite being a rather thin wine, though this is to be expected from the difficult year in Bordeaux. Still, I can see why the Haut Brion was the wine of the vintage. Classic Bordeaux on the palate - confident and rustic without much fruit. Copious amounts of smoke and tobacco come to the fore which is followed by faint notes of stewed cherries and blackcurrant. There is slight acidity and the tannins are so well integrated that I don't even feel the astringency at all! Compared to the Haut Brion, this second wine lacks concentration and power in the nose and the length of finish. However, taking the context of this wine into account, this is still a superb effort from one of the original four premier crus houses!
