  • I have been a fan of this wine since the 1990 vintage. This was, unfortunately, my last bottle of the 1990 and it has been a long time since I had the previous 1990. It needed about 10-15 minutes to clean up on the nose but then it was a crowd pleaser. Medium garnet colour, slightly opaque. Pure Sangiovese nose of forest floor and dark cherry. There is a lot of complexity to the nose and kept changing over the three-hour lunch and ending up with nice earthy notes. Purest fruit at about two hours after opening. The palate was balance, pure, structured, with virtually no tannins, yet no lack of structure. Though the nose began to fade the palate balance hang on till the last drop. Such elegance. I wonder and I worry about what the newer versions of this wine at 15.% plus alcohol will be like after 33 years.

  • Beautiful Sangiovese and neither tired nor past prime from good bottles. Was excited to try this as mature Flaccianello is hard to find and I have always found the vintages from the 2000s (2007, 2004) too brash and unrefined. Hence curious to see how Flaccianello can really age. Not the very best bottle with a top shoulder fill and a soaked cork which sits very tightly though. In the glass a fairly dark garnet with no browning and a thin transparent rim. Earthy notes and some wood spices, dried fruit, very clear and clean, well integrated acidity, no signs of oxidization. A moderate 13.5% alcohol as per label. Medium (-) tannins still providing structure. Medium (+) finish. Impressive Sangiovese at age 32. Drink now but no rush, while well stored bottles will not improve they should still drink well in 5 years time. 93-94

  • UWS (@ JB): Mature bouquet with earth, soy and some rustic flavors. On the palate plums, cherries, dates, figs and chocolate. The tannin still has some bite. Overall a rustic wine with good bitterness. Completely ready now, but no extreme hurry. Will not improve.
