  • Napa 2023: the quieter version; 2/6/2023-2/11/2023 (Napa/Sonoma California): Bottled in 2022 so this spent 115 years in cask and just recently got into the bottle. We drank this over the course of a week. First day it was pretty tight. Interesting, but not as much going on. Even at the end of the week I think it was just starting to open up a bit more. Still intense, caramel, darker dried fruits, drinking pretty well but this is a bottle you could drink over the course of a year.

  • Madeira Pilgrimage; 2/1/2016-2/4/2016 (Madeira): So dark colored. Sharp aromas (the volatile acidity is evident) but it’s packed together with hay, floral tea, cigar shop and smoking jacket aromas. Rich but so floral on the palate with a dizzying array of complex flavors: spiced tea, graham cracker, cigar smoke, sweet coffee, dried roses. So alive, complex and long, a pure joy to sip.

  • Bottled in 2013 – Smell is night and day different compared to the 1971. Surprisingly lively for 108 years old. More forest floor, autumn leaves, walnut, fig, maple syrup. More tertiary flavors and aromas than caramel/orange/plum you find in young Madeira. Brown in color with a decent amount of sediment. Still really enjoyable, liked it better than the last 1952 I had, an intellectual curiosity in terms of having a wine this old.

As with older bottles, it’s interesting to think what was going on in the world at the time. 1907 – The first air force was established, 1st Taxis in NYC, Plaza Hotel opens, Oklahoma becomes the 46th state. Katharine Hepburn and John Wayne born. The first powered flight had taken place just 4 years beforehand. The Ford Model T was still a year away. Amazing!
