  • Drunk at Chiu Tang Hong Kong - Much more complexity and balance than the over ripe, super sweet regular cuvee. Again a bit too much concentration and prominent alcohol for me.

  • BBQ at The Papies (The Papies, Elizabeth St, London): Opened and left to rest for a good 2 hours.
This is one for the ones who like muscular and powerful CdP and this 1995 at 14.8% Alc does pack a punch from a time when global warming was not blamed for high alc. Not heavy and not a rich monster ( Not an Alban or SQN expression here :) ) crushed herbs, light earth spice and soft red fruits. Very interesting wine almost a blend of two different styles. Very good 93

  • The last bottle from my case is a beauty, just like the other 11 bottles. With a nose of cherry griotte, herbs de Provence, and black pepper, the wine says hello. On the palate, the wine is still concentrated, with ripe, fresh, pure, red cherries, with a hint of wild, sweet and tart raspberry, licorice, strawberry and mint sneaking in. Silky and long, but with a bit of dryness in the endnote, the wine requires drinking. The last bottle was better but I am not complaining. At close to 25 years of age, this has more than delivered all the right stuff.

  • My last bottle. Double decanted in the AM

Still dark and brooding. Stern and towering still. The fruit is blackberry more than raspberry. leather, like an old saddle leather rubbed baseball glove. Pure and deep with great clarity, especially for grenache. Large scaled, yet still focused. Some iodine along with the dark fruits, black olives, and a little lavender. Still quite tannic and a little stern. A though provoking wine of character. Power and while maybe not grace, certainly poise. I like the character of this '95 in its taskmaster mode, and I wish I had another bottle to open in 5 years. I think this wine has the stuffing to gain a little more in a few years, and not fall short of its structure.

(Domaine de Marcoux Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes) Bested the '95 Beaucastel in the same flight: tart red fruit, pepper and plum nose; very peppery sweet plum, berry, briary, tangy black fruit, with herbs; a little heat showing on medium-plus finish 94+ pts.

(Domaine de Marcoux Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes) 1995 Chateauneuf du Papes Blindtasted: Group's #4, my #9, 131 pts. - black fruit, plum pudding, jammy nose; jammy, boysenberry, mulberry palate, not much like a CdP; medium finish
