Not corked !!!! And drinking about perfectly. This is an essence of CDP. Ripe dark fruits, macerated red cherries and a bit of olive and pepper. Surprisingly fresh with very good acidity. Not at all OTT or figgy like many more recent deluxe cuvée CDPs and 'only' 14%. No hint of Brett either.

For me this was stunning: very tight out of the bottle, dark fruits, skewing towards black fruit and olive on the nose....open and expanding mixed black red fruits on the palate, very refined with integrated tannins, after a few hours in a wide bottom decanter, it was still holding together nicely, we tasted this alongside the 1995 reserve and the Maxim was a bit more open out of the bottle and decidedly darker fruit than the reserve. Also, 14% alcohol versus 13.5% for the same year reserve

So sad when unicorn bottles are flawed. Not corked, not cooked, but not all there, sad because you could tell what might have been. Very odd, very tart red fruit finish.

(Domaine du Pégau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Maxim) Cork on the nose signaled the night's biggest disappointment, as this is a very rare bottling that I'm unlikely to get a chance to try again; rich and concentrated on the palate, but the palate was still sapped by the cork taint. Dang! (Only 604 bottles produced, and reportedly only 18 distributed to the U.S.)

Not as good as the bottle from a few years back, but still very good, lots of dark fruit and pepper. Chewy, good tannins. Plenty of years left.
