  • Intoxicating nose of (I’m assuming) whole cluster influenced fruit. Ripe blackberry, plum and pen ink. Majik Marker and mint. On the palate there is cassis and bold tannins still from the lignified stems. Nice acid backbone. Wonderfully matured yet still very clean in the mouth. I sampled this with the Coravin a few hours before dinner and determined to open it when dinner was served as it seemed to fade over the first hour in the glass. Imagine my surprise when the second half of the bottle was still just as good on night number two. The vacuvin was all I used and got two days out of this wonderful bottle.

  • Coravin'ed a glass on Wednesday and finished the bottle on Thursday. This bottle had a high shoulder fill with a saturated by intact cork (you could still read the "1966 Giscours" on the side). The color is light ruby with an orange-brown tint to it as you might expect from a 56-year old wine. The nose shows lovely Margaux floral elegance, with some red plum, apple skin and forest floor notes. A very pretty wine, elegance over power, with cherry, tobacco, and red currant notes, a decent dose of acidity and tannins that melt into the background. I opened this now in order to decide whether to bid on another OWC lot that showed up at auction, and I'm glad I pulled the trigger!

Quel vin ! Totalement irrésistible !

  • Fun to try something older than me on Thanksgiving (actually my parents wedding anniversary)
Had few expectations but this showed up so well. Did a double decant for sediment and then drank over several hours. On first pouring it seemed as if we may have missed the window—a bit metallic, medicinal, and faded.
But within 10 minutes had put on some weight and within 30 it was singing with plenty of fruit, fully resolved tannins, and plenty of tertiary notes. The nose was complex and you could keep uncovering the layers with each additional sniff.
On the palate it was full of fruit, earth, pencil lead and other classic bordeaux flavors. Also maybe some smokiness and mustiness (but not in a corked sort of way).
This was a big hit with Sasha (oldest daughter) who has developed a palate for old wines. Meg (stepdaughter) preferred the younger wines we drank tonight, proclaiming that this one ‘smelled like those boat rides at Disney where the boat is supposed to smell old’. Haha I could see her point but still thought it was fantastic.
    Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

  • Amazing. Served it beside a 1995 and the 30 year difference did not show.
