  • A year ago I said the jury was still out. Well, I think we've got a hung jury here. There's something to like and something to dislike. This is just a bit tired and oxidized, yet there is charming honey and fruit in there. A bit too grippy and tilting to astringent, but it freshens up. I think this is best at this point with a mix of pungent cheeses and cured meats. Not sure.

  • Two bottles tried today, and neither was as impressive as the one I had a couple of months ago. Again, golden syrup in colour. An exotic nose of spicy apricot, which is reminiscent of marmalade on the palate. Slightly flat in the mouth. If I had't had a superb bottle two months ago I would have confidently said this was past its best, and should have been drunk five or ten years ago. As it is, I suppose I just have to put this down to two bits of bad luck v one good bit. Cork. A remarkable 16% alcohol - not apparent.

  • Over several nights from a 375ml. The jury is out on this one, but I was not particularly impressed. I've got several more, so here's hoping it finds a bit more integration.

  • The colour of golden syrup. Amazingly perfumed nose of apricots, mango and above all the bitter-sweet-marmalade aroma of botrytis. On the palate, beautifully rich, mouthfilling, very very long. The alcohol is a risky 16% - but the risk is pulled off, as the flavours are so intense and the texture so generous that it ends up being in balance. It's pretty darn sweet, but with a bitter tang; and it's not QUITE sweet enough to be a dessert wine. Not sure what to drink this with; the French would probably have foie gras. Blue cheese might be good. But it is a delight by itself right now... Z-H really is one of the greats! 16%, cork.

  • Plenty of mature fruit notes on the nose but I found the acidity angular and finish disjointed. Don’t know this producer or grape well enough to know if it’s going to get better.
