  • Pop'n'pour. Surprisingly dark red colour, and the brim is actually red and not brick-coloured. Very nice and elegant on the nose, with notes of cigar box, roses, a little tar, black currants. Full bodied with totally vivid fruit and notes of black currants, tobacco. Very good Margaux, specially considering the vintage. 1981 is considered a weak year, but there was nothing weak about this wine.

It opened up in the glasses, and would have benefited from a half to one hour in the carafe. This bottle would easily drink well for maybe five more years, but will perhaps not get any better than it already is.

  • The cork is terrific, into neck fill. Ruby red and hard-to-observe rim and core difference (comparable to some 2000). Weak nose of rust and red fruit, with gravel and spice. Tannin has all gone. This medium bodied wine is round and acidity is in the right proportion. Finish is short. Given this bottle is in such a good condition, the wine has been in decline and should drink up.

  • The bottle of wine was not drinkable. It had the marked odor and flavor associated with cork taint. The cork was wet through and there was mold under the capsule.

92 pts

  • Old and mature Margaux. Not much time left for this guy but he is still alive and ok for now. Drink. Brick colored. Wonderful nose reminiscent of gravel, earth, and hint of dark fruit. Tannins mellow but present, balanced and slightly sweet. Finish was it's weakest point.

(Chateau Margaux Margaux) A dense purple wine. Austere blackcurrant and mineral aromas, quite sexy and powerful. A touch curranty. This is a delightful wine to open the second flight. Near perfect balance on the palate, There are still some dry tannins, but these lie with a layer of sweet and luscious fruit. Finishes well, with a length that goes on and on and on. This wine has plenty of life in it yet. Surely a first growth.
