Another CA Rhone from the presumably reference-level list at Alinea - clearly stored in pristine condition as the cork came out cleanly and proudly. If the Saxum was like a Beaucastel, this reminded me of a ripe Cote Rotie. Plummy with a meatiness and filigree red and black cherry acidity. Excellent structure at 27 years old. The only thing that really gives away the new world origins of this wonderful Syrah was the warm, sweetness on the finish which the steep and stern banks of the Rhone don't offer. Incredible experience, and absolutely delicious.

Huge nose, very dark color. Very plummy and full of black pepper. Extremely youthful still but drinking really well. So soft in the mouth. Very ripe. Very nice. 93/94

PNP. Nose rich and full. Palate fully resolved and has great fruit with integrated tannin and acidity. This was second bottle because first was corked. Awesome and great match with elk/port juniper reduction. I think that this has plenty of life ahead but this is killer now.

Memorial Weekend BBQ at the Shaffer's (The Shaffer's - Highland Park, IL): Nose has a good yum factor with black, brambly fruit and toast. Palate seems mature and even a bit tired with dried plummy notes. Shortish finish. Surprised on reveal but didn't get a chance to re-taste.
