Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 89.1 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 74 notes)

Tasted by StewartWent on 11/18/2009 & rated 88 points: I thought this was showing more life and was more robust than the previous tasting notes suggested. Good bottle perhaps? Clearly ripe and perhaps even a touch baked, showing hot dry red berries with savoury characters. I know this doesn't sound particularly appealing but this does appear to have a good structure. Some chocolate creeps in, and there's a nice inky / licorice overlay that is a little hard to penetrate, suggesting (to me at least) that the wine might be still just outside it's optimum drinking window. WS WOTY? Perhaps a bit underwhelming with this tag. (282 views)
Tasted by Grinner on 11/1/2009 & rated 92 points: 13th Annual Lyon 10 year Retrospective (Eugene, Oregon): Brick rim, it has all kinds of non-fruit notes and flavors: sangre de Toro, leather, kelp, and underbrush. Better and longer than I remember my previous bottle. (295 views)

Tasted by thalf on 10/16/2009 & rated 88 points: Overall, a real disappointment. I had high hopes given the "wine of the year" accolade from Spectator. We shared the bottle this weekend and I found it more light than i had expected. The nose was lacking, and the wine didn't have the body I had hoped. It is an elegant glass as noted in some other reviews. Smooth, but earthy, nice fruit. Just nothing memorable for me here... (438 views)
Tasted by thefrenches on 9/17/2009 & rated 89 points: A very spicy, herbally, and earthy nose - the fruit is there, it's just very much secondary. Very light rim on this wine, surprisingly so, almost fading to clear. Very mature, silky mouthfeel, tannins are a bit finely grained, but still almost non-existent. This wine is a bit one-dimensional at present, and is likely over its peak. Not unenjoyable, just not at all spectacular, either. (688 views)
Tasted by the godfather on 8/9/2009 & rated 86 points: Lots of earth, not sure this ever had much fruit, not pedigree (887 views)
Tasted by carlwhat on 7/12/2009: lovely wine. loads of secondary characteristics coming through. myriad of aromas and flavors. nicely balanced. this bottle drank well.... (950 views)
Tasted by thewine-insider.com on 7/3/2009 & rated 89 points: Wine Spectator Wine of the year in 2002. Impressive layers of exotic sweet plum, licorice, pepper, mineral, and earth. The licorice and black pepper linger onto the less impressive short finish.

Tasted by Cellarmaster on 4/4/2009 & rated 90 points: You can tell this was WS wine of the year for 1999. It is ageing well. For those that say this wine is light, it is in fact becoming better balanced, more elegant with age, still bold however. The last time I had this wine was 3 years ago at a Guigal dinner. It was a standout in the filght, even at the dinner, which included older Guigal single vineyard Cote Rotie. (1446 views)
Tasted by Fielding on 2/26/2009 & rated 90 points: Decanted for 20 minutes. Youthful ruby in the glass. Aromas of plums, violets, brambles and saddle leather. Plums, brambles and lavender on the palate, with a touch of white pepper on the finish. Light for a CDP, this is drinking quite nicely. (1510 views)
 Tasted by d'Artagnan on 2/5/2009 & rated 92 points: Horizontale 1999
(1602 views)
Tasted by Rex66 on 1/10/2009 & rated 92 points: This was so much better than the last bottle I had in 2006. Clearly this needed time; the flavor profile is pretty prototypical CdP. Meaty, blackcherry aromas, followed with a blast of red fruit and a grippy finish. (1637 views)
Tasted by Mrbuzz on 1/7/2009 & rated 87 points: Med bodied plum, cherry, dirty fruit.....nice pepper, leather, earthy mushrooms. Still has bright crancherry acidity, slight orange rind, dried roses. Just not "tasty" imo. Has like a stale cigar to it that makes the wine a little off putting for me. Also light and watered down as well. Of the more than half a dozen of this wine I've had...this is the worst showing. (1683 views)
Tasted by 1800kidney on 12/7/2008 & rated 90 points: Same note as March 2005; disappointed that this has not evolved (1710 views)
Tasted by Anonymous on 12/5/2008: WOTN. Certainly best bottle of 4. Beautifully aged bottle of cdp... (1738 views)
Tasted by Zinlady on 11/30/2008 & rated 90 points: At first the wine was not pleasant but it started to show very well and we enjoyed every sip with our steak dinner. Looking forward to my one remaining bottle (1836 views)
Tasted by chris_3 on 10/3/2008 & rated 85 points: pleasant mature well integrated enjoyable to drink wine. mild tannins, sinewy taste mild leather in the taste (1859 views)
Tasted by vanpe003 on 7/5/2008 & rated 88 points: I was very surprised to go back through my notes and find that this was WS's WOTY for 2002. For me, pleasant but not much more. A very nice and forward grenache nose. Medium bodied palate with plenty of tannins, and a bit of a metallic finish. This last disappeared over the course of 4-5 hours. Surprisingly to me, while this was 3rd of 3 as a sipper, it was easily the best pairing with dry-aged NY strips (vs. 2002 Maris La Touge and 2001 Northstar Merlot). (2047 views)
Tasted by Pknut on 5/14/2008: With cousin Dave. Decent enough, but hardly anything special. A good blend of black fruits, smoothed out by some age but not dried out nor old, along with a good amount of garrigue and black pepper. Tannins are still not completely integrated. Nothing wrong here at all, just not anything special and certainly not worthy, in my book, of a "Wine of the Year" accolade. I just don't see this wine as anything more than satisfactory.  Tasted by Ryan D on 5/2/2008: Beautiful, sweet aromas on the nose. A smooth, elegant wine in the mouth. Truly enjoyable and drinking very well right now (2666 views)
Tasted by bluevespa on 4/15/2008 & rated 88 points: Had better bottles in the past. This wine is starting to loose it. Pepper and barnyard, with fading fruit. (2937 views)
Tasted by Richard Jennings on 4/7/2008 & rated 90 points: 1999 Chateauneuf du Papes vs. Australian GSMs Blindtasted (Rich and Peggy's Home in Los Altos, CA): Group's #5 (my #4) – 50 pts.; 1, 0, 3, 3 - medium red violet color, very clear; herbal, garrigue, oregano, roasted lamb and pepper nose; oregano, sage, liquid pepper, lamb jus, herbes de Provence palate; medium finish 90+ pts.
