Very drinkable but unfortunately over the hill. The wine is on point in terms of correctness, just not enough legs to last anymore. On the nose it actually smells promising, sweet roses, earth and liquorice. But the palate is lacking; elegant, acidic, with some mushroom, tobacco and little fruits left to speak of. There’s also a distinct sherry like note here which probably is a natural consequence of the age. No luck with the Barolo roulette this year.

Bottle in excellent condition. Fill level at about 4 cm. Cork came out in one piece, not fully saturated. Decanted about 4 hours prior to serving; significant sediment in bottle. Very pale, almost claret color, confirming the light color nature of nebbiolo. At first this didn't show well; particularly on the nose. There was a slight acetone note and the aromas were quite muted. It did show well on the palate with still significant tannin structure and acidity. It turned out, incredibly, that all this wine needed was more time... After another couple of hours in the decanted, it really started to blossom. The acetone notes were gone and the beautiful aged Barolo characteristics had moved in. It kept improving until the wine was gone. Next time, it will be, at least, a six hour decant. Two ounces left in bottle from decant; still fresh 24 hours later with classic Barolo character. By now the texture is fairly smooth, richer, just outstanding...

Festa del Piemonte: Gala Dinner (The Pool in NYC): I actually got my glass of this a bit late and by the time I did it was getting a bit chunky. Despite that it's drinking well. Well balanced. I enjoyed it.

Hedonism and Refinement at 60!; 5/14/2021-5/15/2021 (Joe and Kyla's Bar and Grill): Only bottle decanted for more than a minute this evening (4 hrs)! Garnet bowl, clear rim. This truly spoke of its origin. Elegant but firm, there's dark cherry, leather, tar and rubber (Barolo Meets the Road!), then dried flowers. Acidic finish and some tannins! Glorious old wine for the old guy!

(Giacomo Conterno Barolo) Light bricked cherry red color with 1 millimeter clear meniscus; tart cherry, roses, dried berry, sandalwood, bacon fat nose; surprisingly youthful, dried berry, tart cherry, anise, milk chocolate, dried cherry palate; long finish 95+ points (even better showing than last bottle I tried; decanted for 4 hours)
(Giacomo Conterno Barolo) Bricked medium red color with clear meniscus; deer jus, truffle, mushroom nose; mature, earthy, sweet, autumnal, dried berry palate with depth and grip, will go 20-25 more years; long finish 94+ pts.
(Giacomo Conterno Barolo) Nose of crushed hot rocks, some black truffles, sour cherry, mineral and fresh wet dirt. Great nose with a definite charred burnt element to it that adds to the complexity. Lush witn an amazing level of sweet fruit and crazy ripeness. Really explosive and complex with gorgeous inner mouth perfume. Still tannic but the tannins are ripe and lush. Long finish. This is gorgeous. Wonderful texture. This is a wow wine and will last 25-35 more years.
