Deep ruby with aromas of black peppercorn, rubber, leather and cream. in the mouth black pepper, leather. The texture is quite tight and the mouth feel almost astringent. Medium plus tannin that is unripe and green. Past it's best I think...no evidence of fruit and what is left is not very pleasant. An odd experience as the other two bottles I had were very nice (the last of which was consumed only three months ago) and I had high hopes for this one. The cork appeared sound but something just wasn't right and this bottle was considerably advanced.
Milky ruby color. Smokey cured meats on the nose and palate, which faded after 4 hours or so to reveal a sour cherry side, carrying through day 2. This is fully mature but has the acid backbone to go a few more years easily.
This is lovely. on the nose leather, tobacco, cedarwood and aniseed coupled with the usual phenolic and a tiny touch of mint. that may make this sound a little aggressive and robust - a far from welcoming beast, but the fire is on and the crumpets are toasting...in the mouth gentle acidity and tannin coupled with subtle fruit and a medium finish. This will last longer but why wait - it has a perfect mouth-feel and is truly sublime

(Chapoutier Crozes-Ermitage Les Varonniers) This seems really very closed down on the nose, showing rather a lot of reduction, along with some gamey tinges. Chapoutier finds some graphite minerality in the wine, but what I find more prominent are the gamey-meaty notes, along with a little greenness. An easy going palate, quite relaxed, but through the middle showing more tension and lots of crystal-tinged fruit, as well as an awful lot of spice here and though into the finish which also shows some rather sharp structure. Substantially through the middle it is pleasing but the rather spiky structure dominates more towards the end.
