My last bottle of this was oxidised. This was from the same case and absolutely singing. Very pure red and purple fruits with some violets on the nose. Great flesh and depth for a village wine. Layered and underpinned by minerally structure. Balanced and just showing a hint of earthy development. Expansive and long.

1990s Burgundy, part one (Noize): Dark and youthful, probably unready - sure, Barthod and 1999 both have a reputation for backwardness, but I thought a 22yo village would be more open than this. Black cherry, blueberry, tobacco and menthol showed themselves in glimpses, then were clamped down by the structure. My favourite of the first flight, based on the more aromatic intervals.

Nick A’s 1990’s burgundy (Noizé, London): Again, quite dark with a slightly dusty element to the nose. Youthfully resolved. Lovely texture. A little hig( toned on the nose without being volatile. With air the tannic structure reasserts itself. ***

(Barthod Ghislaine Chambolle-Musigny) Medium, medium-plus ruby-red colour. The nose is very high toned, just a little metallic and is faintly red in tone - over 90 minutes there is little more showing. A little sweetness, rather linear and some intensity too. The acidity is mouth-watering and the length quite good. Linear and giving little today - but many villages and 1er cru wines from 1999 are showing in quite a similar way right now. Seems an okay wine but one that’s best left in the cellar for at least a couple more years. Day two this has much more depth and interest - confirming that it’s time to leave in the cellar.
(Barthod Ghislaine Chambolle-Musigny) Short note, two days after drinking. Medium cherry-red. Soaring if rather tight nose, very elegant with high, fresh tones. The palate is also a little tight, but, like the nose, very elegant. The acidity carries it through the mid-palate into a good finish. Good concentration and has the balance to last very well.
(Ghislaine Barthod Chambolle-Musigny) Great wine and just the essence of Chambolle. Very nice nose of roses, apple, cherries, lots of earth and some saltiness. Palate was rich and concentrated with tons of depth. Almost 1er Cru in quality. Sweet and concentrated with great structure. Fantastic wine. Village wines are outrageous in 1999 and drinking great now.
(Barthod Ghislaine Chambolle-Musigny) A good medium/medium-plus colour, virtually no fading. The nose has high toned raspberries and a decadent red cherry. Lovely concentration to the fruit, very fresh acidity and well mannered tannins. Good length - did I buy a case of this? - I think I did - a good decision!

One of the most difficult vintages I've had of Burgundy.
