Sweet, creamy texture that I found distracting for a Barolo. 14.5% alcohol that could be felt with the obvious liquorice notes. Definitely preferred the prettier, more red-fruited basic 2015 Ravera di Monforte that I had previously.

Principiano Ferdinando Boscareto 2011 Opened about 6 hours before to slow ox. Delicious wine, showing well. On the nose, lots of sweet licorice, sweet elegant black fruit, sweet spice and clove, hints of herbal and thyme notes, and even some savoury elements. The palate was full of sweet black licorice (as the predominant flavour) supported with sweet black fruit, even hints of raisins, dried fruits and sweet figs with some savoury herbs, soft tannins. Pretty delicious and well integrated already. 95/100

Woodwinters Edinburgh Fine Wine Bash (Woodwinters Edinburgh): Brownish red. Fragrant, oily nose. Really singular aroma but hard to place - sweet blueberry jelly, or raspberry ripple ice cream? Soft taste, sweet fruit, punchy finish. A touch herbal. Possibly my first barolo, and it was good! [14.5% abv; Woodwinters, £77].
