  • Cork came out fragmented but the wine had not saturated the cork. This one had a really weird nose at first. Like one of the other reviewers said, it was mud, hay, very earthy. The palate initially was almost untolerable. But, after it sat in the decanter for about an hour, it was much better. Obviously over the hill, this wine was enjoyable and it was really what I expected it to be. It wasn't COMPLETELY done. The other two bottles seem to have much better cork positions and labels, so I'm going to open these next. If you are holding this one, it's time to open it up and see whatcha got!

  • Winebid purchase. High shoulder fill. Cork saturated nearly to the top - came out in one piece, though.

Color: Rather pretty ruby garnet with just a hint of browning.

Nose: Initially very funky. With air, hay, green beans, earth, dried flowers, faint spice and tea.

Palate: Just barely alive. Some fruit, very mature. No tannins, but with a semblance of length and balance - fading as I write this... This should have been drunk 20 years ago.

A curiosity at best. My second bottle of this and consistent with the first. Interestingly, not nearly as good as the regular bottling of the '71, which I recently drank.

  • Dead. Very sad.

  • This was significantly better than a bottle we had a few months ago. It seemed a bit thin (perhaps too cold) for the first 30 minutes or so, it put on some weight as the dinner progressed, and although not a blockbuster, very enjoyable. From what I understand the quality of the Krug S.S. wines started to deteriorate after the early '70's, perhaps a management decision to change the style of the wines, not sure. But at $25 at auction, worth every dollar. Nice autumnal notes on the nose, a bit of forest floor. Cool old classic California label as well.
