(Château Brane-Cantenac (Margaux)) Quite an exotic character on the nose, with dark, pure and defined fruits, very expressive, with Oriental spices and black beans, hints of black tea leaves, and a little note of iron firmness too. There is the creamy weight of the vintage at the start, and this continues through the palate betraying the character of the vintage very plainly. There is some acidity at the core, but it is the weight of the wine with its heavy sense to the fruit that really dominates the character of the palate. The finish is grippy with fat tannins. The team at Brane-Cantenac picked some Cabernet Sauvignon early in this vintage, alongside the Merlot, in order to preserve some aromatic complexity and this may well have helped the acidity as well. It just doesn't have the more pleasing definition of the more typical vintages. But the finish is lively and energetic and there is certainly success here within the context of the vintage.

(Chateau Brane-Cantenac Margaux) CS 65%, M 30%, CF 5%. A dense, meaty, feral-furry character on the nose, with some roasted cherry fruit, the sort of picture that comes with the vintage. But on the palate it does not have the usual big, creamy, blowsy style. Actually this has a really appealing composition, with some cool cherry character, nicely polished, with a glint of the chewy tannins on a second taste, but with acidity too. This is an attractive, well put-together wine.

(Chateau Brane-Cantenac Margaux) This has a more open and immediately appealing nose, with good fruit and some attractive oak. It is rather subdued. It has the tannins of the vintage, but not obtrusively so. There is nice flavour, it has a good balance, with a grippy finish. Some depth and it has a little more focus. Certainly superior to the 2002. Some success for Brane-Cantenac in this vintage, it seems.
