  • Low shoulder and signs of leaking. On opening nose of wet cardboard and horse stable, which persisted. Flat on the palate with few acidity and dusty notes of old leather and other earthy flavours left, that dissipated after a couple of hours. Probably not a pristine bottle but kind of difficult to say whether or not there was a flaw such as TCA in a 61 year old wine, but there probably was.

  • This wine was very hard for me to open but the hubby convinced me it was time. We both had rough days at work and are getting ready for along trip to Asia. Tonight was for a treat. I am actually tasting this wine right now as I type so there will be no time for editing. I opened the OWC of the 12 botlle case. Absolutely clean. No soilage at all from Katrina. This was a case we had questions about. No longer. The bottle was opened and no issue with the cork or leakage. The pour was into fine Reidel and I did not decant it all. This was a spur of the moment thing after a bad day. The color was gorgeous garnet with amber tones at its edge. The bouquet out of the bottle was pleasing sensuality. Almost immediately I became happy and calm. This is why wine matters to me. It effects my essence when I need it to.

I am glad I had the self restraint to not open this wine to early. The Pomerols of this era are best described as delicious fruitiness. The wine was floral, cedar cassis. wet clay and lead pencil. The mid palate had old leather berry cherry tints with penultimate smoothness. Other flavors were clearly present in layers like herb spice and earth. The integration of tannins, sugar, and acidity again is beautifully orchestrated in this bottle. This bottle was as good as any 61 Petrus I have had. The wine reminds me much of the 61 Trotanoy in constuction and elegance. My hubby thinks 62 is one of the most underrated vintages ever in recorded history and after this bottle I am inclined ot agree. I feel the same was about 83 compared to the 82 vintage as well. The finish on this lady is long lucious and lovely. It is one of the smoothest wines I have had in my mouth and I want to drink it more often. This wine exceeds my experience with many of the higher rated 61's. The aging in the bottle has made this wine a study in patience. I think this wine has huge life left and I bet gets better. Rating 98 plus...............
