Dark and dense color with very mature aromas bordering on Madeira. Still has plenty of dark fruit but didn't enjoy it and left the bottle half full. Definitely held on to this far too long. (lots of sediment so be sure to decant.)

Deep garnet, starting to brick at the rim. Lovely evolved nose - so evolved that I'd put it as at least 10 years older than 1998. Sweet black fruit, with violet flower notes tending towards being high toned. Lots of earthy notes - more just plain earth than sous bois. Sweet tobacco and cherry kernels. Quite rich on the attack. Fully mature, but not at all past it. Good, very open black fruit. Quite coarsely textured in the mouth, and definitely needing food. Utterly enormous length, with poised black fruit lingering for ages. There's a lot of depth and power here, and it's a great deal meatier than most Chiantis I can remember having. I would guess at more than the 13.5% abv with which the label credits it.
I see this cost me £20 in 2002. That seems a bit steep for what's in the glass.

Spicy and earthy. A nice surprise given its "drink by" date.
