  • Good colour. Shows well on the nose. Punchy, integrated, measured palate. Showing well now, drink soon.

  • Fantastic Bordeaux blend. Dark colour. Minimal cabernet leafiness on the palate, more cassis and plum. Medium to fuller bodied, with waves of cabernet damson plums. Classic wine, and is fairly cheap for a benchmark of the style.

  • My last bottle of this, alas. Mellow, resolved, a freshening green streak, gorgeous tobacco sweetness at the . An absolute delight.

  • Decanted briefly for a ton of sediment and then contemplatively sipped over a Saturday evening at home. Bright translucent ruby just hinting at amber but definitely showing a long watery meniscus. Nose is gosh...immediate damp forest floor leaves and mulch, lots of fresh-sawn cedar planking, mulberry, blueberry, black coal. Palate is immediately very rich mulberry and blueberry fruit, quite tart blackberries, cold Pu Ehr Chinese tea, surprisingly thin mouthfeel, quite tannic. The tartness then blows off to show somewhat plusher red and black plum. Dry, red brick dust finish. After a couple of hours topping up the glass, this all sugues to tertiary autumnal leaves and bracken across the nose and the palate. This reminds me of a Mas De Gassac of a similar age but this doesn't have the future longevity. Surprisingly the Yarra Yering Pinot Noir 2003 I drank last month has a ton of life left ahead of it to improve. I have drank this many times with friends, who have generally seen more virtue than me in it (as in many things) but I would drink up soon.

  • Sunday Lunch at Crown Wine Cellars (Crown Wine Cellars, 18 Deep Water Bay Drive, Shouson Hill, Hong Kong): Decented for an hour (which seemed about right). Slightly dusky opaque ruby colour with a distinctly watery meniscus...it looked a lot older than the 1986 Ducru Beaucaillou we drank alongside it. Nose is immediate Australian eucalyptus. dry undergrowth and red/currant pastilles. Palate is slightly low acidity, quite dusty, similar but more distinctly sweet red and black fruit pastilles. Initially a good growling resonance and reverberance on the finish but it all felt a bit monotone and quite quickly fell away to overly bitter black cherry and overstrong espresso coffee. I would definitely drink this up as it is on a downward decline, I think.
