Decanted for two hours. Nose of cedar and tobacco. Seriously stained bottle, must be unfiltered. This wine has finally come around. Round, everything in balance, long finish, young mature and will hold for years.
Cedary notes on the nose, green bell peppers, tobacco - not as ripe and expressive on the nose compared to the 1996. On the palate similar observations - less ripe and harder, a bit lean and drying towards the finish. Nice length. 91-93

(Pichon Lalande) The Pichon Lalande was class in a glass and why I drink Bordeaux. I have always loved this wine, although I found it a point behind usual, a touch closed. The cassis and pencil mélange worked its magic, as did the high Merlot content that makes Pichon so seductive.
(Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande) Bricking medium dark red violet color; earthy, deep, olive, tart black fruit, herbaceous nose; tasty, herbaceous, tart cassis, tobacco, mineral palate with chewy, sweet tannins; medium-plus finish 94+ pts. (my #1 of the flight, group's #2 out of 8 )
(Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande) Group's #4 (my #4) – 30 pts; 0, 1, 0, 1 – Bricking dark red violet color; nice, tart blackberry and berry nose with a touch of lamb/beef jus; elegant and solid palate of tart plum, cassis, rich and balanced; medium-plus finish 92+ pts.
(Pichon Lalande) This was tight but gorgeous. Classic PL nose of spice, green acorn, plum, cassis and tar. Some oak too but very well integrated. Long finish and great elegance. Young but still pretty expressive. Very promising. Check back in five years.
