  • With black bean and steak fajitas. Fairly ripe blackberry fruit with beef blood in the nose, with just a touch of oak around the edges. The oak spice is pretty subtle and I didn't mind it. Worsted texture in the mouth with good acidity, somewhat chunky tannins that finish with a slight bitterness. Elegant style at 12.8% abv. It is a little rough around the edges due to youth, but this has the makings of a good bottle with more age. Would buy again. $24.

The second day open this is still very tasty. More black olive and herb flavors, some animal. A little softer than on day one. Makes me think this will improve and will check another bottle in 3 to 4 years. Tried this next to the 04 Gonon St Joseph, and where the Gonon leaned toward Cote Rotie, this was closer to Cornas.

  • Northern Hemisphere Syrah at the Ragen's (Seattle, WA): This was my #2 wine of the night and a rather easy blind guess as the one French wine in the lineup. (I was even thinking it had to be a Crozes, as it lacked the structure of a Hermitage, the acid of a Cote Rotie and the sheer animal character of a Cornas.) Mmm, nice wine and gorgeous with rack of lamb! Sanguine, black pepper, and black cherry. Really elegant on the palate, sappy, pure, this is what I want to drink!

  • Decanted for 2-3 hours. Strong chocolate on the nose. Post-decanting, the wine blossomed beautifully with pepper, spice and cocoa layered with the restrained but full syrah fruit. Tannins lurked in the background. A very lovely wine drinking quite well despite its youth. With these Northern Rhones, patience pays off.

  • Intriguing wine that grew on us over the course of an evening. It tasted almost like a burgundy -- lower alcohol, higher acidity. Not anywhere near as good as the 2003, which featured a wonderfully smoky, bacon fat richness. Needs more time in the cellar.

  • opened a bottle and at first it was very pepery and reminded me of strong cheese. However after poring it in a jug and leaving it for a few hours it was great.
