No decant. Light brownish color, very mixed nose. Bouquet of licorice, leather, garrigue, dark fruit. Nose getting better over the evening. At the end of drinking window: drink up within 1 or 2 years.

(Le Vieux Donjon Châteauneuf-du-Pape) Bricked medium dark red violet color; redolent, tobacco, cigar box, roasted black fruit nose; tasty, dried tobacco, roasted black fruit, mineral, charcoal, tar palate; medium-plus finish
(Le Vieux Donjon Châteauneuf-du-Pape) Bricking medium dark red violet color; a bit porty, chocolate pudding, licorice nose; tart dried berry, licorice, tar palate; medium finish (possible heat damage?)
(Le Vieux Donjon Châteauneuf-du-Pape) Dark brick red color; deep beefy nose with prune and cherry; tasty beef, pepper, black fruit, plum and bay leaf palate with medium spicy peppery finish (whole cluster in '98)
(Le Vieux Donjon) Just a classic CDP. Should be in the dictionary under Chateauneuf. Wild nose of garrigue, ripe cherry fruit, animal, leather and just plain old unidentifiable sauvage. Palate was juicy and bordering on port-like but held in check by acidity. Long finish with just a touch of warmth. But then that warmth is what classicaly styled CDP is all about. Great stuff.
(Le Vieux Donjon Châteauneuf-du-Pape) Short ribs, beets and beef gravy nose; tasty, beefy, meaty mid-palate, with resolved tannins and a medium finish 95+ pts.

Very mature - soft tannins, still with good fruit, relatively low alcohol for CdP. A classic old-style CdP which is sadly getting hard to find.
