  Transcendent bottle. Absolute peak of maturity. Complex, soaring, cedar/tobacco/earthy nose; round and sweet, a hint of cocoa on the finish. In a perfect placer.

  could this wine be just over the peak, or was it this bottle, or was it a mistake to decant. Great spicy, tobacco-y, leather and cedar notes. A wine with a bouquet to keep on savoring. On the palate, the fruit was rich and full and the tannins not fully resolved, but there was something missing in the mid-palate. it started strong, seemed almost watery in the middle, but ended well. perhaps i'm burdened by palate memory of 88 brunelli in top form, but i'm concerned that i should drink my reminign bottles and check in on the 88 Riserva... but I'm not ruling out the manner in which the bottle was handled

  Copper color leaning more towards brown than orange. Huge nose of caramel and sherryesque aromas. On palate the wine transforms from classic Brunello flavors to a dry sherryesque finish. What a wonderful and unique wine.

  I'm a big fan of the 88 vintage in Montalcino, but prior tastings of this bottle over the years had me wondering whether this bottling was as good as it should be. Last night changed my mind. Decanted from cool storage for about 90 minutes, then returned to the bottle and decanted for another 90 at the restaurant. The bouquet sings of beautiful aromatics, hinted by mentholated, backed by a chorus of rich Montalcino soil and sweet leather. Good acidity holds it all together and rich and full on the palate. The richness of the entire package belied whatever modernity Bianchini might have been toying with in his early days. Simply a first rate effort, at a great place now.

  Some browning at the rim but there is still plenty of life left in this one. Beautiful mature Brunello nose, lots of fruit, good structure and moderately long finish. Really nice wine.
