Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 89.7 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 5 notes)

Tasted by Anonymous on 11/20/2008: Shockingly not overly flabby, not overly alcoholic, and not as generally uninteresting as many (most) '03s...I was surprised by this wine, it's pretty good...sweetness level seems LESS than expected...yet the wine has stunning length, good richness, yet with classic characteristics...in a really good state, yet will improve...not yet showing secondary.  Tasted by Eric on 7/16/2006: Seattle Tasting Group does 'Teutonic' Whites (Seattle, WA): Talc, green apple, slate. Mouthwatering. This showed much more acid than I expected. An intense baby of a wine. (1272 views)
Tasted by Anonymous on 4/7/2006 & rated 91 points: Awesome nose. It just smells like pinched lime peel and white flowers. With each sniff I found it more enthralling. The palate shows more acidity than it did 18 months ago. It also is a bit lusher than I remember. This wine is very enjoyable now and should only get better. Paired very well with seared foie gras.  Tasted by AlexHop on 5/22/2005 & rated 90 points: Opened a month ago and it was nice, but I just had the last glass from the bottle and its really improved with a month of sitting (post-opening) in my fridge. Lots of tropical fruit, and has developed better acid. (1406 views)
Tasted by Anonymous on 12/19/2004 & rated 88 points: Nose is the essence of lime peel and acacia. The palate is very sweet but does not have the acid at present to balance it. Perhaps with time it will improve. Still a very enjoyable (BA-like) wine. (1532 views)

From label text:" Situated in the Ruwer valley, the Karthaeuserhof's wine making tradition dates back to Roman times. Carthusian monks were making wine at the estate from 1335-1803. Today the Tyrells, who purchased the estate from Napolean in 1811, are in charge. In 1997, Cristoph Tyrell, the Karthaeuserhof's current proprietor, was selected Winemaker fo the Year by the prestigious Feinschmecker magazine in Germany. In 2005, he was awarded as[sic] Producer of the Year by the bestselling German Wineguide [sic] Gault Millau."

Starting in 2007 the German wine authorities have changed labeling laws to rename all of the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer wines to just "Mosel." This puts this and other database driven sites in a difficult, as millions of old wine label reflect the former labeling. As described here, CellarTracker has elected to remain with the old labeling for a number of years to avoid confusion. At some point we will switch over to just "Mosel" but not for a few years at least. Mosel WeinKulturland (Mosel-Saar-Ruwer Wein e.V.)
