36th Annual Zinfandel Retrospective (Rich & Dana's): Aromas of black raspberry and cherry, becoming darker and developing a molasses-like note- almost like a deep barbeque sauce quality- a bit smoky. Flavors of dark fruit, spice, currants and herbs with a subtle earthy note. 89+ pts.
This full bodied, mature red was delightful with the savory spicy foods we accompanied it with. The Petite Sirah was noticeable in both the bouquet and mid palate, and the finish was nice, albeit a touch short from a wine of this pedigree. Definitely more forward than many of Ridge's Zins - I would say that at 5 1/2 years after bottling its not done but I don't see it getting much better either. As with most of Ridge's stuff, it was well made, coherently put together and is pretty much what you would expect from a nice Spring Mountain Zin. I should probably give this a higher score but I have had better old Ridge Zins in the past (and hopefully the future - I have a lot in my cellar!) so overall I am happy with this score.
