Sommelier Appreciation Dinner 2020 (The Brown Residence): There is a hint of oxidative note. Soft red fruit, caramel, cedar/oak and still noticeable tannins. A bit hollow in the middle and showing Gaja oak. My least favorite wine of the Italian flight.

Not all Gaja are created equally, and certainly not all are meant for extensive ageing. This 1995 Gaja Barbaresco is fully mature and is over the hill. Tasted blind - Gamey leather, dried cherry, mild sweet oak. Good weight with Dry tar-y tannins, good chunk of new oak. Barolo? 1996? (86/100)

Battle of Barbaresco, cooperative Produttori against Gaja, the king of Barbaresco. Vintages 85, 90 and 01 tasted against each other. Very mature nose with barnyard, damp cellar, wet leafs, mushrooms and forest floor. Round and smooth mouthfeel but weak fruit. Some tannins alive in the background. Clearly past its best days. Storage highly questionable.

Dry crumbly cork removed in many pieces. Allowed to breathe in glass 30 minutes. Hazy garnet-blood red color. Fabulous bouquet of sweet fresh raspberries and cherries and their liqueurs, incense, potpourri, leather, and dry red soil. Similar on the palate, seamless, balanced, sophisticated, satin mouthfeel, medium-full body, exuberant but not heavy. Superb from the beginning and improved steadily with air. Enjoyed with fresh Alba truffles at Solare Restaurant in San Diego.
